Protecting yourself from today's threats

May 06, 2016 • Security

Each year, thousands of Canadians fall victim to financial scams and security breaches. Many scams try to obtain your personal information with the intention of stealing your identity, while others ask you to send money via wire order or some other means. Whether it is retirement savings or personal information, scammers and hackers have the ability to destroy what you have worked so hard to achieve.

Your safety is our priority

At Assante, our priority is to safeguard your personal information and your investment portfolios. We take extreme care when it comes to your privacy and your peace of mind. From hardware encryption to anti-virus and malware solutions, we are diligent in monitoring your security across our network 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

One of our most recent solutions is our client-to-advisor online document sharing feature, My Portal. We recognize that meeting with me in person is not always feasible, which is why we have created a secure means of communication over the Internet. Available through our online account access, Assante InvestorOnline, My Portal lets you share documents and chat with me (and my team) electronically, and in a protected environment.

Protect yourself from scammers

Increasing your awareness of financial and other scams is the first steps toward prevention. A few tips are:

  • Never send money or give personal or financial information to anyone you do not know and trust – online, over the phone or in person.
  • Take a moment to think carefully about what you’re being asked to do. Does it make sense? With financial scams, the information presented is often incomplete or inaccurate.
  • The best course of action is to delete suspicious e-mails without opening or replying to them. When in doubt, get independent advice from a trusted source.

As always, I would be more than happy to discuss these as well as many other tips I’ve found to be valuable in protecting my clients’ privacy and financial assets. If you believe you are the victim of identity theft, I can assist you when contacting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. For further information on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, visit its website at www.antifraudcentre.ca
